Housing Programs

Boulder County Housing Authority (BCHA) is one of three housing authorities in Boulder County that administers the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) or Section 8 housing. HCV is a Federal Assistance Program funded by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), to assist low-income individuals or families to pay a portion of their rent. BCHA currently administers over 800 vouchers in private or in BCHA owned units in the county.

- The HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program (VASH)
- Family Self Sufficiency (FSS)
- Family Unification Program (FUP)
- Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA) Program
Can I apply for a Housing Choice Voucher anytime?
- No. In order to obtain a Housing Choice Voucher, an individual or family must apply for the voucher waiting list when it is open to the community. Applicants are chosen via a lottery. Once an application is filled and submitted, the applicant will receive a “confirmation letter” via US Mail with their lottery number. This lottery number is valid for up to two years.
How will I know if I have been selected?
- BCHA will select a set of lottery numbers and post them on their website (www.bouldercountyhousing.org).
- Applicants that have been selected by the lottery will be screened through a criminal background checks, income and asset verifications and other means to ensure eligibility for the Housing Choice Voucher.
- It is important to keep the confirmation letter for two years in order to verify selection.
- BCHA will notify those selected by mail with instructions to start the screening process.
How many vouchers are issued each year by BCHA?
- Although it is hard to estimate, BCHA issues approximately 50 vouchers per year. Unfortunately the demand is very high since we receive over 1000 applications for the lottery.
Who is eligible for a voucher?
- All households must also have income at or below 50% of the Area Median Income for Boulder County (For a household of four in 2015 this translates to $49,700). Preference is given to applicants based on the categories listed below. All applicants must meet the “Residency” preference and one of the “Household Definitions.”
